Vivar del Cid

Southern Europe

Vivar del Cid is a village of about 260 inhabitants in the municipality of Quintanilla Vivar, about seven kilometres from Burgos in northern Spain, and it is often called simply Vivar. Tradition holds that the village was the birthplace of Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, known as El Cid, a tradition first written down in the Castilian epic poem the Cantar de Mio Cid. Its full name joins the place name Vivar to the epithet Cid, by which Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar is known.
