The administrative centre and largest city of Volgograd Oblast in southern Russia, on the western bank of the Volga River, known successively as Tsaritsyn from 1589 to 1925 and as Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 before taking its current name. With slightly over one million residents it is the 16th-largest city in Russia, the third-largest in the Southern Federal District, and the fourth-largest along the Volga.
