Vrhnika is a town in Slovenia's Inner Carniola region, seat of the Municipality of Vrhnika, on the Ljubljanica River about 21 kilometers from Ljubljana, with 8,454 residents at the 2012 census. Built on the site of the Roman settlement of Nauportus, a transfer point where river cargo was loaded onto pack animals or carts, it was one of Carniola's wealthiest market towns from the High Middle Ages into the early 18th century until the Austrian Southern Railway bypassed it in the 1840s and it declined into a satellite of Ljubljana.
