Whanganui, also spelled Wanganui, is a city in the Manawatu-Whanganui region of New Zealand's North Island, at the mouth of the Whanganui River, the country's longest navigable waterway. It is the ancestral territory of Te Ati Haunui-a-Paparangi and related Whanganui Maori groups, was founded as the New Zealand Company's second settlement after Wellington in 1840, and was named a UNESCO City of Design in 2021; its urban population was about 42,800 in June 2025, the 19th most populous urban area in New Zealand.
