Whangarei is the northernmost city in New Zealand and the largest settlement of the Northland Region, part of the Whangarei District formed in 1989. Declared a city in 1964, it had a population of about 56,100 in June 2025; Captain James Cook first sighted its harbour in 1769 and named the bay for the bream he caught there, and the city is home to the volcanic Mount Parihaka and the Hundertwasser Art Centre, which opened in 2022.
