Whitehorse is the capital of Yukon and the largest city in Northern Canada. Incorporated in 1950, it lies at kilometre 1426 on the Alaska Highway in southern Yukon, with its downtown and Riverdale areas on both shores of the Yukon River. The city takes its name from the White Horse Rapids, whose foam was said to resemble the mane of a white horse.
