Willemstad is the capital and largest city of Curacao, an island in the southern Caribbean that is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and it holds about ninety percent of the island's population. It was founded in 1634 when the Dutch West India Company took the island from Spain, and its original walled quarter of Punda grew into a major center of the Atlantic slave trade before developing into today's historic quarters of Punda, Otrobanda, Scharloo and Pietermaai Smal around Sint Anna Bay. The city's Dutch colonial architecture and natural harbor earned its historic center UNESCO World Heritage status in 1997, and it is home to the oldest surviving synagogue in the Americas, built in 1674; its population was 136,660 at the 2011 census.
