Winschoten is a city of about 18,518 residents in the municipality of Oldambt in the northeastern Netherlands, near the German border towns of Leer and Papenburg, and the largest urban center and seat of government in the Oldambt region. It received city rights in 1825, the last town in the Netherlands to be granted them, and remained independent until merging into Oldambt in 2010; it was a transit point for the deportation of its Jewish community during the Second World War.
