Wurzburg is a city in the Lower Franconia region of northern Bavaria, Germany, on the Main river, with a late-2024 population of 133,258 making it Franconia's second-largest city after Nuremberg. Christianized in 686 by Irish missionaries, it is seat of the Wurzburg Residence, a UNESCO World Heritage palace complex built between 1720 and 1744 with a ceiling fresco by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo; about 90 percent of the city was destroyed in a British firebombing raid on 16 March 1945, and its historic structures were painstakingly reconstructed afterward.
