Xining is the capital and most populous city of Qinghai province in western China, and the largest city on the Tibetan Plateau. Its population was about 2.5 million at the 2020 census, with about 2.0 million in the urban area, at an elevation of 2,275 meters in the Huangshui River valley. For over two thousand years the city was a commercial hub on the Hexi Corridor of the Northern Silk Road, and it has been a prefectural seat since receiving its current name in 1104. Xining is home to the Kumbum Monastery and the Dongguan Mosque.
