Yambol

Yambol is a city in southeastern Bulgaria, in the historical region of Thrace, that serves as the administrative center of Yambol Province and sits on both banks of the Tundzha River. The ancient Thracian royal city of Kabile lies about ten kilometers away, and Yambol's own name evolved over centuries of Macedonian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman rule before the city joined Bulgaria in 1885. With a 2021 population of 63,656, down from more than 90,000 in the late 1980s, Yambol was the first Bulgarian city to offer residential natural gas service and is known locally for its basketball club, which won the national championship in 2002.
