Yapeyu is a town in the San Martin Department of Corrientes Province in northeastern Argentina, with about 2,000 inhabitants at the 2001 census. Its name comes from the Guarani language and means ripe fruit. It grew from the Yapeyu reduction, a Jesuit mission among the Guarani, on the river once called the Yapeyu and now called the Guaviravi. The town is known throughout Argentina as the birthplace of General Jose de San Martin, who lived from 1778 to 1850 and is a hero of the War of Independence. One of its notable monuments is the Arco Trunco.
