Yueyang is a city in northeastern Hunan province, China, situated on the northeastern shore of Dongting Lake where it meets the Yangtze river. The city is best known for the Yueyang Tower, a historic tower on the lake's edge that has been celebrated in Chinese literature for centuries, most famously in an essay by the Song-dynasty official Fan Zhongyan. Yueyang functions as a port and industrial center linking the Dongting Lake basin to Yangtze river shipping.
