Zabrze is an industrial city in Silesia in southern Poland, near Katowice, lying in the Silesian Highlands on the Bytomka River, a tributary of the Oder. It forms the western part of the Metropolis GZM, a metropolitan area of around 2 million people, and sits within the 2.7 million inhabitant Katowice urban area, itself part of a wider Katowice-Ostrava metropolitan area of just over five million people; the city's own population was 168,946 as of December 2021, down from 188,122 in June 2009. Zabrze borders the cities of Gliwice, Bytom and Ruda Slaska, is home to the football club Gornik Zabrze, one of Poland's most accomplished clubs, and its historic coal mine complex is listed as a Historic Monument of Poland.
