Zagorje ob Savi

Zagorje ob Savi is a town in the Central Sava Valley of central Slovenia, about 52 kilometers east of Ljubljana in the traditional region of Upper Carniola. The area was settled as early as the Late Bronze and Iron Ages, and the discovery of coal deposits in 1755 drove the town's development; coal mining remained a main activity until the last mines closed in 1995. The town's Neo-Romanesque parish church of Saints Peter and Paul was built in 1873, and the municipality suffered significant flooding in 2010. Its population was around 7,000 in recent counts, down from 6,893 in 2002 to 6,020 by 2021.
