Zhanaozen, also spelled Janaozen and formerly known as Novy Uzen, is a city in Mangystau Region in southwestern Kazakhstan, located southeast of the regional capital Aktau. Its Kazakh name translates as new river. Its population grew from 63,337 in the 1999 census to 113,014 in 2009 and 147,962 by 2018.
