Zhanjiang is a prefecture level city on the Leizhou Peninsula in Guangdong Province, China, described as the southernmost port on the coast of mainland China and a major commercial and maritime hub for southwestern China. It had a population of about 7 million at the 2020 census. The city was established as the French concession of Guangzhouwan in 1898 and was returned to China in 1946. Zhanjiang today serves as the headquarters of the South Sea Fleet of the Peoples Liberation Army Navy and has grown into a manufacturing and export center specializing in petrochemicals, steel and port logistics.
