Zlin is a city in the Czech Republic, seat of the Zlin Region, about 70 kilometers east of Brno on the Drevnice River in the Vizovice Highlands. First documented in 1322, it was renamed Gottwaldov after Czechoslovak communist president Klement Gottwald from 1949 to 1989, reverting to Zlin on 1 January 1990, and had around 74,917 inhabitants in 2026 data. The modern city's development is tied to the Bata Shoes Company, founded in 1894 by Tomas Bata, whose social and urban development scheme built Zlin into a functionalist industrial city unique in Europe between 1923 and 1938, and much of the city is protected today as an urban monument zone for its architectural and planning value.
