Zoutkamp

Zoutkamp is a village in the municipality of Het Hogeland in the Dutch province of Groningen, with a 2021 population of 1,195 across 1.23 square kilometres. It began as a military fortification built in 1576 during the Dutch Revolt before developing into a fishing community in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The village's harbour was superseded in 1969 by a new port at nearby Lauwersoog following construction of the Lauwersmeer dike, though local fishing boats still carry Zoutkamp's historic ZK registration code, and the old harbour now serves mainly recreational boating.
