The Empire of Japan, also called Imperial Japan, was the period of Japanese history spanning 79 years, from the Meiji Restoration on 3 January 1868 to the ratification of the Constitution of Japan on 3 May 1947. From August 1910 to September 1945 it included mainland Japan, Okinawa, the Kurils, Karafuto, Korea and Taiwan. Under the slogans Enrich the Country, Strengthen the Armed Forces and Promote Industry it industrialised and militarised very fast, and in the 1920s and 1930s militarism and nationalism rose until Japan joined the Axis alliance. It surrendered on 2 September 1945, and its territory then shrank to mainland Japan.
