Estonia is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe, bordered by the Gulf of Finland to the north, the Baltic Sea to the west, Latvia to the south, and Russia to the east, comprising a mainland plus more than 2,300 islands and islets including Saaremaa and Hiiumaa. It declared independence from the Russian and German Empires on 24 February 1918; after Soviet occupation from 1940, its independence was restored on 20 August 1991. It is a unitary parliamentary republic. Its capital is Tallinn.
