The Federated States of Micronesia is an island country in the Micronesia region of Oceania, encompassing the majority of the Caroline Islands across four states, Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae, spanning nearly 2,700 kilometers of the western Pacific just north of the equator. It became fully sovereign under a Compact of Free Association with the United States, effective 3 November 1986. Its capital is Palikir.
