The French Third Republic was the system of government adopted in France from 4 September 1870, when the Second French Empire collapsed during the Franco-Prussian War, until 10 July 1940, when the Fall of France in World War II led to the formation of the Vichy government. It was a parliamentary republic with Paris as its capital. Its early days were dominated by the disruption of the Franco-Prussian War, social upheaval and the Paris Commune, and the German Empire, proclaimed by the invaders at Versailles, annexed the French regions of Alsace and Lorraine. The republic lasted seventy years.
