Joseon, officially the Great Joseon State, was a dynastic kingdom of Korea that existed for 505 years. Taejo of Joseon founded it in 1392 after the overthrow of Goryeo, and the Korean Empire replaced it in 1897. In 1393 the country was retitled Joseon and the capital moved to modern-day Seoul. The kingdom expanded its northern borders to the natural boundaries of the Amnok and Tuman rivers by subjugating the Jurchens. Over the centuries Joseon entrenched Confucian ideals in Korean society, installed Neo-Confucianism as the state ideology, and discouraged Buddhism, whose followers were occasionally persecuted.
