Suriname is a country in northern South America, also considered part of the Caribbean and the West Indies, situated slightly north of the equator with over 90 percent rainforest coverage; it is the smallest country in South America by both population and territory. It gained independence from the Netherlands on 25 November 1975. Its capital is Paramaribo.
