Tuvalu is an archipelagic country in the Polynesian sub-region of Oceania, in the Pacific Ocean about midway between Hawaii and Australia. At about 26 square kilometers it is one of the smallest and least populated sovereign states in the world. It gained independence from the United Kingdom on 1 October 1978. Its capital is Funafuti.
