Country

West Germany

Historical federal republic, Western Europe (1949-1990)

West Germany was the common English name for the Federal Republic of Germany from its formation on 23 May 1949 until reunification with East Germany on 3 October 1990. It was sometimes called the Bonn Republic after its capital, Bonn. It took shape during the Allied occupation after the Second World War from twelve states formed in the American, British and French zones, and during the Cold War it belonged to the Western Bloc together with West Berlin. Under Chancellor Konrad Adenauer it chose full alignment with NATO and backed agreements that grew into the European Union, and its economic miracle of the 1950s made it the second-largest economy in the world. In 1990 East Germany voted to dissolve and join the Federal Republic, so reunited Germany is the direct continuation of the state rather than a new one.
