The Thar Desert, also called the Great Indian Desert, is an arid region of the northwestern Indian subcontinent stretching across India and Pakistan, covering about 264,091 square kilometers and ranking among the largest subtropical deserts in Asia by area. Roughly two-thirds of it lies in India, mostly in the state of Rajasthan with portions extending into Gujarat, Haryana and Punjab, while the remainder lies in Pakistan's Sindh and Punjab provinces; it is bordered by the Indo-Gangetic Plain to the north, west and northeast, the Rann of Kutch to the south, and the Aravalli Range to the east.
