Moldova is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Romania to the west along the Prut River and by Ukraine to the north, east and south along the Dniester River. An unrecognized breakaway region, Transnistria, occupies territory east of the Dniester. It declared independence from the Soviet Union on 27 August 1991. It is a unitary parliamentary republic.
