Aquifer Recharge

Hydrological and Oceanic Processes

The replenishment of groundwater in an underground aquifer as surface water infiltrates and percolates down to the water table, whether through direct rainfall infiltration, seepage from rivers and lakes, or deliberate engineered recharge. Recharge rates that fail to keep pace with groundwater extraction are the underlying cause of aquifer depletion in many of the world's major agricultural regions.
