The shaping of a smooth, elongated hill of glacial till beneath moving ice, streamlined with its long axis parallel to the direction of ice flow and typically steeper on the up-ice end than the down-ice end. Drumlins commonly occur in swarms, or fields, and their orientation is used to reconstruct the flow direction of vanished ice sheets.
