The development of a gently sloping bedrock surface, thinly veneered with sediment, at the base of a retreating mountain front in arid and semi-arid regions. Sheetwash and occasional stream flow plane the surface as the mountain front erodes backward, producing the broad, gently inclined aprons typical of basin-and-range desert landscapes.
