The breakdown of rock through the physical and chemical action of living organisms: plant roots wedging apart joints, burrowing animals disturbing regolith, and lichens and microbes secreting acids that etch mineral surfaces. It works alongside mechanical and chemical weathering rather than as a wholly separate mechanism, and is often the first stage in soil formation on bare rock.
