Folding

Tectonics and Volcanism

The bending of originally flat rock layers into wave-like arches and troughs under compressive tectonic stress, without the rock breaking. Folding on scales from centimetres to hundreds of kilometres shapes mountain belts worldwide and is often visible in road cuts and cliff faces as sharply curved sedimentary layers.

Quote, Mountain building section
The compressive forces produced by plate convergence result in pervasive deformation of the crust of the continental margin (thrust tectonics). This takes the form of folding of the ductile deeper crust and thrust faulting in the upper brittle crust.
