The downward movement of dissolved nutrients and minerals out of the upper soil layers as water percolates through, carrying soluble material beyond the reach of plant roots and into deeper soil or groundwater. Leaching is especially pronounced in humid climates with high rainfall and can gradually deplete a soil's fertility if not offset by ongoing nutrient inputs.
