Lake Vostok

Lake Vostok is the largest of Antarctica's 675 known subglacial lakes and the sixteenth-largest lake in the world by area. It lies at the southern Pole of Cold beneath Russia's Vostok Station, under the surface of the central East Antarctic Ice Sheet, itself roughly 3,488 meters above mean sea level. The lake's own surface sits about 4,000 meters beneath the ice, placing it approximately 500 meters below sea level.
