Lake Tanganyika is an African Great Lake within the Albertine Rift branch of the East African Rift system, bordered by Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi and Zambia. It is the second largest freshwater lake in the world by volume and the second deepest, after Lake Baikal in both cases, and it holds an estimated 250 endemic cichlid fish species.
