The Alaska Peninsula is a peninsula in southwestern Alaska extending southwest from the state's mainland toward the Aleutian Islands, separating the Pacific Ocean from Bristol Bay and the Bering Sea. It is dotted with active volcanoes as part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, including several within Katmai National Park, and its coastal waters and rivers support major salmon runs that in turn sustain one of the largest concentrations of brown bears in the world. The peninsula is sparsely populated, with most communities dependent on commercial fishing.
