A group or chain of islands clustered together in a body of water, often sharing a common geological origin such as a volcanic hot spot track, a partly submerged mountain range, or a continental margin broken up by rising sea level. Indonesia and the Philippines are among the world's largest archipelagos, each comprising many thousands of individual islands.
