A crescent-shaped sand dune with its horns pointing downwind, formed where a limited sand supply moves across a firm, relatively flat desert surface under a wind blowing consistently from one direction. Barchan dunes migrate as a whole across the desert floor as sand is eroded from the windward slope and deposited over the crest onto the steeper leeward slip face.
