Bog

Grasslands and Savannas

A bog, or bogland, is a wetland that builds up peat from the slow accumulation of dead plant material, most often mosses such as sphagnum. It is one of the four main types of wetland, and its acidic, waterlogged conditions let plant material accumulate rather than fully decay, so a bog functions as a carbon sink over time. Other names used for the same landform include mire and, in North America, muskeg, while a more mineral rich version of the same wetland type is called a fen.
