A canyon with steep or vertical walls on three sides and a single, often narrow, entrance, so that it forms a natural enclosure open at only one end, typically cut into flat-lying sedimentary rock by a stream that has not yet broken through the resistant rock at its head. Box canyons have long been used as natural livestock enclosures and defensive positions where they occur.
