A narrow, isolated hill with steep sides and a small, flat or pointed top, capped by resistant rock and standing as the eroded remnant of a once more extensive mesa or plateau. A butte is generally taller than it is wide across its top, distinguishing it from the broader, flatter mesa it is descended from by continued erosion.
