A deep valley with steep, often near-vertical walls, typically cut by a river through resistant rock over a long span of geological time, frequently aided by regional uplift that steepens the river's gradient as erosion proceeds. The Grand Canyon, carved by the Colorado River, is the landform's best-known example anywhere in the world.
