A pointed piece of land that projects out into a body of water from the surrounding coastline, typically more prominent and often more rugged than the ordinary shoreline nearby, and frequently marking a significant change in coastline direction or a notable navigational landmark. Capes commonly form where a resistant rock outcrop has withstood coastal erosion better than the softer coastline around it.
