Cape Cod is a peninsula extending into the Atlantic Ocean from the southeastern corner of Massachusetts, in the northeastern United States. It covers 339 square miles, reaches about 65 miles out to sea with a width of between 1 and 20 miles, and has more than 400 miles of shoreline. The peninsula was formed by glacial activity around 16,000 to 20,000 years ago and consists mostly of terminal moraine and outwash plain, the southernmost extent of glaciation in southeastern New England.
