A natural underground hollow or chamber, most commonly carved by the dissolution of soluble bedrock over long periods, though caves can also form through wave action along a coastline, the cooling of lava, or the collapse of surface rock. Cave systems can extend for great distances underground and often preserve some of the most detailed and undisturbed geological and archaeological records found anywhere.
