A ridge with a gentle slope on one side, following the dip of a resistant rock layer, and a much steeper slope or cliff on the other side, where erosion has cut across the exposed edge of that same layer. Cuestas form in regions of gently tilted sedimentary rock and are common along the margins of coastal plains and sedimentary basins.
