A landform built up at a river's mouth where it enters a standing body of water and loses velocity, depositing its sediment load faster than waves and currents can remove it. A delta's shape, arcuate, bird's-foot or estuarine among others, reflects the balance between the river's sediment supply and the reworking power of the waves and tides it meets.
