A roughly circular or oval mountain formed where magma pushes up overlying rock layers into a broad, blister-like bulge without erupting at the surface, or where regional uplift arches a stack of rock layers upward around a central high point. Erosion later strips the crest of a dome to expose progressively older rock outward from its center.
